Tips to Make Turbo Training More Fun
Turbo training although effective isn’t the most interesting way to train. Lack of scenery and indeed lack of a breeze combine to make turbo training a mental challenge. Also, as there is no descending the pedal turning is constant and demanding.
In this post we look at ways to make your turbo training more fun.
Core Body Temperature
When you ride outside even on a hot day the breeze acts as a kind of air conditioning system, lowing your body temperature. Inside there is no breeze as there is no forward momentum. As such, your body temperature will rise.
Professional riders recommend using a fan to simulate the breeze and to keep your body temperature cooler and more pleasant.
Listen to Upbeat Music
With the lack of scenery music is a good way to occupy your mind as you ride. Upbeat music is recommended as it helps you focus your mind and remain cheerful, as well as helping you maintain a good pace.
As an alternative you can watch a movie. The important thing is that you make turbo training a bit more pleasant.
Analyse Data
On the theme of keeping your mind off turbo training analysing your data can be a good motivator to keep the pedals turning. If you use a heart monitor remember your heart rate will be higher as your body temperature will be hotter.
Turbo Train with others
Some bike shops will have turbo trainers setup and ready to go. Why not turbo train with others? Not only does this bring a social element to training but it normally acts as an inspiration to train that little bit harder. - Not recommended during the Covid-19 outbreak! Remember, you need to keep distance with other people. This is for your own and their safety.
It may also be possible to train virtually depending on how sophisticated your turbo trainer is. Again, this will help you train that bit harder as competitiveness is increased.
Breaks
As turbo training is constant make sure you take breaks. When you ride outside you take natural breaks from descending and stopping for traffic. So take a break and consider using it to cross train to strengthen your core.
To get the most out of turbo training ensure you have a structured training programme. This will give you something to stick to, and keep your fitness levels maintained.
