Mallorca - The Best Place for Cycling on Earth
Mallorca the 'Cycling Paradise'.
For a long time Mallorca has been deemed the 'Cycling Paradise' by professionals, amateurs, and people who enjoy getting from A to B by bike. Let's look at why this is, and why every year, the pro-peloton teams train on this Mediterranean island in the off-season.
Climate
Mallorca has 300 days sunshine a year, and although in the summer months temperatures are hitting 30 °C+, outside of these months temperatures are ideal for cycling. In February temperatures are a cooler 16-19 °C. In March, April, May, and October, temperatures hover around the 25 °C mark.
Although at night November temperatures are around 10 °C during the day they still hit 18°C consistently. Combine this with little rain, and you have the perfect place to ride a bike.
These temperatures are good cycling temperatures as they are not too hot, and not too cold.
Terrain
The roads on Mallorca are long and winding. They are well maintained, and connect villages, towns, and beaches well. Although parts of Mallorca are largely flat, the Tramuntana mountain range offers the hill climbing challenges and training opportunities sought after by cyclists eager to improve their skills.
With golden beaches, views of the Balearic Sea, mountains, hills, and quaint villages, there is always something to see and admire. Many cycling holidays provide stops where the most scenic views can be had.
Cycle Culture
Mallorca is blessed with almost car free roads and in addition, has developed a pro-cycling culture. The population's positive attitude towards cyclists and the reduced risk of a road accident has made it an ideal place to learn to cycle, perfect your cycling, and improve your cycling to a good standard.
Every year Mallorca hosts the M312, the International Cyclotourist Tour of Mallorca. This is a 312km cycle sportive around the island, and it is an event which is celebrated by almost the whole of Mallorca. It is a massive event on the amateur sportive calendar, and is the longest sportive of its type.
